Donovan Davidson aka DODA (Black American, b. 1987), a Brooklyn-based concept artist, photographer, curator, creative entrepreneur, composer and musician, navigates the intersections of time, memory, and human experience through a rich, multidisciplinary practice. His work spans visual art, music, and social activism, probing how personal stories and collective histories shape our sense of identity, place, and belonging.

At the heart of Davidson’s work lies a belief that creation is both a meditative act and a form of resistance—a way to reclaim agency in a world where time slips away and society imposes rigid boundaries. His ongoing multimedia project, Hiraeth, embodies this philosophy. Blending film photography, live music, and recorded interviews, Hiraeth crafts immersive experiences that uncover the layered, multifaceted identities of its subjects. Like the Welsh term it draws its name from, the project evokes a deep, almost aching nostalgia for a home that may never have existed—a longing for a place, a feeling, or a fleeting moment.

Davidson’s upcoming sonic endeavor, Ether and Asphalt, meditates on the tension between urban life and spiritual transcendence, fusing modal harmonies, ambient soundscapes, and the raw sounds of city life. The result is a sonic map that leads listeners through the chaos and stillness of urban existence, reflecting both struggle and serenity. By aligning musical modes with the body’s chakra system, Davidson reimagines the city as both a physical landscape and a metaphysical space—where the hum of subways, the flicker of neon lights, and the rhythm of everyday movement transform into pathways for reflection and healing.

As the founder of Deep Space Arts, Davidson has fostered a dynamic creative ecosystem, that acts as both an incubator and sanctuary for interdisciplinary collaboration. Deep Space Arts has operated along the East Coast and partnering with notable creative hubs like the late Union Arts in Washington, DC, where Davidson served as treasurer on its non-profit board. This collective empowered artists with the resources and freedom to explore the vast intersections of art, technology, and social change.

Davidson’s dedication to community-building is also reflected in Earthseed, a visionary nonprofit concept that merges sustainable agriculture with artistic practice. Rooted in a desire to reclaim and repurpose family heirs’ property on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, the initiative seeks to create a space where ecological consciousness and creative expression intertwine, cultivating both environmental stewardship and artistic innovation.

Davidson’s work bridges disciplines, mediums, and moments in time. Whether through the lens of his camera, the strings of his guitar, or the walls of a shared creative space, he seeks to uncover the hidden harmonies that link us—to each other, to our histories, and to the unfolding present. His practice is, above all, an act of storytelling, honoring the complexities of the human experience while inviting audiences to listen, see, and feel beyond the surface.
